Milius says to have been inspired by the sect of Jim Jones in the comment by the DVD.

1978: The collective suicide of 914 followers of the Temple of the People (Jonestown)

(source: BUBBLES of the 4th quarter 1988).

One weekend of November like so much of others. America looks at the match of baseball, walks in family, reads the enormous newspapers of Saturday… nothing special, the housewives think of the dinner of Thanksgiving, the week which comes (commemoration of the first harvested crop by the “Fathers Pilgrims” of Mayflower, unloaded at Plymouth on the coast of current, State of Massachusetts). There will be many good things, in addition to turkey and of the jam of cranberries. The children will be there, the grandparents, all the family…

The Sect of JIM JONES Jimjonesbrochureofpeoplnw6

New falls: a deputy with the Room of the Representatives, two journalists, whose one of the large chain of TV CBS, a photographer, have been just killed on an aerodrome of bush of Guyana (old Guyana British, territory located between Venezuela, Brazil, Surinam and, of course, the Atlantic. The murderers would be members of a sect Californian, the “Temple of the People”, which installed a “colony” in the middle of the equatorial jungle. More than thousand people would have followed the chief of the sect there, the Reverend Jim Jones.
Men, women, children, old men.

Throughout the weekend, the news bulletins bring details, and especially reveal the continuation of the drama: as soon as after the murder of the deputy Leo Ryan and his companions, come to get information about the real situation with Jonestown (thus names the colony, of the name of “Father”), there was with the camp a collective suicide, by poisoning; shots were heard.

And all the following week, the nightmare continues, as information arrives: the Guianese army found “at least 383 corpses, of which those of Jones, his wife and one of her children”. One is without news of the other followers. They undoubtedly wander in the jungle surrounding the camp But with the wire of the bulletins, the number of the victims increases: 775… to the final figure: 914, in addition to the five people killed at the aerodrome (four visitors, plus one of the followers having chosen to leave Jonestown). And we will have the accounts, by the survivors and the journalists made after the drama, the photographs also, insupportable, of the collapsed bodies, piled up, often of the intertwined families; the buckets having contained the potion mortal are still there. On his throne, Jim Jones was killed out of a ball.

That which - without to have ever intended to speak up to that point about the “Temple of the People” - had studied the “new sects” for several years, lived this week a kind of waked up nightmare. It was the realization of the anguish which it had often tested in front of the incredible influence of some chiefs and the state of quasi extatic tender of the disciples, fear maintained in them with respect to the external, “bad” world, “condemned”, “satanic”, baited with their loss, with the corollary: aggressiveness towards this world and enemies of the “Father”, also being able to be turned over in suicidal will. He had driven out his fears while saying himself: “you exaggerate” - “they would not go up to that point” - “one (who?) would prevent some”… And then: who would have expressed such fears, with the risk to panic even more of the families tested already well enough and distressed? Not, one preferred not even not to imagine the worst. And here that that had arrived!

Pasteur named Jim Jones

The Sect of JIM JONES Erertv8

Born in 1931 in Indiana (USED Jim Jones is ordered, in 1964, Pasteur of the “Christian Church of the disciples of Christ”, one of the many Churches independent of the United States. She would have between one and two million members, the majority in Middle West.

But, since 1953, Jim Jones had founded his first community: the “Christian Church of the Parliament of God”. Later, the name will be changed into “People' S Temple Full Gospel Church” (“Church of the Full Gospel of the Temple of the People”) summary in” People' S Temple “, Temple of the People.

The Sect of JIM JONES Rerdz9

From 1961 to 1963, it remains as missionary with Belo Horizonte (Brazil). It occupies orphanages to with it. It makes a short visit in Guyana.

In 1966, it leaves Indiana, with a hundred disciples, and will be established in Ukiah (California) to 160 km in the north of San Francisco. It buys a church, other buildings, and as from this moment, the faithful ones are sent each weekend in the truck in San Francisco and Los Angeles to make proselytism and to search. According to former followers', each one of these forwardings paid more than 30.000 $. Moreover, the faithful ones poured initially 25% of their income with Jones; but as their engagement intensified, they were strongly encouraged to give to him more, even the totality of their profits - or to even work almost free for the “Temple of the People” and his works. Among converted, there are the marginal ones, old people, the many ones assisted receiving the helps of the social Assistance; but also of easy people, educated, allured by the possibility of carrying out an ideal of fraternity in a harmonious community, with people of all races; some made gift of all their goods.

The golden age of the Temple of the People

In any case, the money flows. In 1971, Jones buys an old synagogue in San Francisco and a church in Los Angeles. It is the golden age of the Temple of the People. Its social achievements are quoted in example: dispensary, restaurants social, workshops, houses of children, reintegration the marginal ones, doped, young delinquents. The press sings its praises. Jim Jones is the friend of political personalities of foreground: the governor of California, the mayor of San Francisco. And this friendship is active: it is able to give an electoral support for the candidates who have his favour; it is the only one with being able to at once send several hundreds of people to electoral meetings, to stress slogans and to make the snap. That is worth eulogistic testimonys to him influential characters, including, inter alia, Rosalyn Caner, the woman of the President, or the Vice-president Walter Mondale. It will be able to make use of it near the government of Guyana, when it requests the authorization to be established in this country with a group of disciples.
Its reputation had already been worth to him to be named director of the commission of the Human rights of Indianapolis. In California, one entrusts to him the supervision of pupils of the social Assistance, it occupies a station of responsibility in the services for assistance.

Some false notes in this chorus of praises: Jim Jones reinforced his prestige by “miraculous cures”, and some realized of trickeries employed well (to make pretence extract from the cancerous tumours of the throat or the abdomen of accomplices, by handling chicken entrails skilfully; to make go false a paralytic supply in wheel chair…). They said later to have accepted these processes by thinking that it was necessary for the faith of simple people; that the goals were creditable, and that the end justifies the means. One had spoken about brutalities, of a suspect death; the disillusioned followers were the subject of threats; but that had not tarnished the image of the prophet whose “Church” gathered, says one, up to 20.000 faithful.

The back of the decoration

At the end of July 1977, the magazine New West publishes an investigation into what really occurs to the Temple from the People: behind the frontage of racial harmony, of assistance to the misfits of the American company, of merry life within a great family, it reigned in fact a constant brutality: verbal, psychological and physical violence (interminable sermons of the “Father”, during whole nights, drubbings for those which fell asleep, public, but so written and signed confessions, of often imaginary things allowing then the intimidation, threats, blackmail against those which would think of leaving the group; parents separate their children, often maltreated, badly nourished, subjected to an intensive endoctrination; without speaking about favouritism, the arbitrary one, sexual imaginations of the chief). Among those whose summarized testimony was quoted by New West, there were a couple, AI and Jeanie Mills (they had changed name after their rupture with the sect). They had spent six years in the sect, allured by the personality of Jim Jones, attracted by the apparent harmony and good works. Disillusioned, they had left, without a penny (they had given all that they had), threatened so much so that they had left the area. They had taken along with them in the sect five their children. They were assassinated in February 1980, more than one year after the dramatic end of the sect; but all the members had not perished. The murderers, to our knowledge, were not identified.

It was the first time that people dared speech, and that their testimony was published. In spite of the praises whose it had been the object up to that point, Jim Jones was unable to support this unmatched note. It is true that other people enhardirent themselves and told the hell and the disillusion which they had lived. It was the first attack with its prestige.

Since 1973, Jim Jones had sent a mission in Guyana to seek a site for an agricultural colony intended for the rehabilitation of doped or the “hard ones” needing a hard life, in the open air, with an intense physical activity. The following year, the Guianese government rented 11.000 hectares in full jungle to him, and a first group from California started to clear and install hutments. And in 1977, with more than 1.000 disciples, including children and old men, Jim Jones settled in his “Jonestown”.

Phantasms of Jim Jones

For a long time, it now is known, Jim Jones was haunted by the spectrum of a nuclear Apocalypse; since its stay in South America, it imagined that the jungle in the North of this continent would be one of the saved places. More and more, it saw enemies everywhere; least criticism or reserve appeared to him the sign of a conspiracy against him, assembled by the CIA, the FBI, the Nazis ready to seize the power in the United States and to destroy the races of color. It instilled into its disciples his own persecution mania, which was even easier in closed vase, without contact with the external world, information being able to counterbalance the speech of the “Father”. It was necessary that all the inhabitants of the camp are well persuaded that if they left Jonestown, their fate would be dreadful, and that death was preferable what awaited them. Moreover, how would be parties, with foot through kilometers of jungle, not having neither money nor papers (their passports were under key in the trunk of the Master). And Jones touched the allowance-old age and the pensions of his disciples. This benefactor of the poor was not only one paranoiac, but an advised swindler; he had transferred from the million dollars in foreign banks, in the Caribbean and even in Switzerland. One however found large sums in liquid in his safes.

And it was also learned that the collective suicide was not impromptu; there had been repetitions: Jones had made drink with a whole a liquid of which he had said to them that it was poison - to reveal only then mystification. It was “to test their faith”. Thus, the first which drank the fatal potion could believe, during three or four minutes, which they still acted of a setting in scene. It was not the case for the following: all were not voluntary besides, far from there the moon hundred succeeded in escaping); but they were surrounded by armed guards. And the magnetic tape on the spot was found that Jones recorded at the time of this last scene: it still turned when all was finished. To hear is an insupportable thing.

The inspection of Leo Ryan

When the Representative Leo Ryan decided to go to the site to realize by itself of what there was of truth in the accounts of former members of the sect and concerns of the families, it did not know all. It had been said to him that the living conditions in Jonestown were very bad, exhausting work, under a very hard climate, thin food, the cruel physical punishments, applied even to children. But at the requests of information addressed to the State Department (the American ministry of the Foreign Affairs), it was answered by a circular saying that the visits of the Consul of the United States had not revealed anything of worrying, that people were content with their fate. Leo Ryan, it either, had been able nothing to obtain more precise. And the lawyers of Jim Jones, Charles Garry and Mark Lane, highly dissuaded it to come to disturb the peace of people who had finally found it.

Not very satisfied with these assuaging remarks, but vague, Leo Ryan left, accompanied members of the families by followers, her parliamentary assistant (who were wounded) and several journalists. Admitted not without difficulties inside the camp, the deputy and his companions are entitled to the guided tour of an idyllic place, to a correct dinner and even to a musical evening. Some details seem a little odd or suspect, but Ryan himself, and more still the journalists skeptics in front of the charges carried by the families (than they treat in petto paranoiacs), think that all that is extremely acceptable. Jim Jones himself appeared rather sick to them and even near to the insanity per moments, but the “colony”, it, was well organized, people had the air looked after well and content. Late in the first evening, and more still the next morning November 18, of the individuals, then whole families said to the Ryan deputy whom they wanted to leave with him. Certain families were divided. Jim Jones was furious: all these people, said it, were going to try to destroy it by telling lies. A man precipitates on the deputy, a knife with the hand, but somebody diverts the blade. Finally those which wanted to leave go from there, in a trailer of tractor to the small aerodrome where two planes must take them along. And it is there that the massacre starts: one of faithful of Jim Jones had threaded among the group of leaving. On the aircraft ready to take off, it draws a revolver and kills Ryan and several others. At the same moment, a second vehicle arrives at trailer, with armed guards sent by the chief - they open fire on all that moves, complete the casualties - there will be all the same survivors, the legal assistant of the Ryan deputy, Jackie Speier, Steve Stung, taker of sights for the NBC chain, seriously wounded - they could be evacuated after long hours of waiting; several others, slightly wounded, of which Charles Krause, of Washington Post (1).

PostSubject: Re: The Sect of JIM JONES   The Sect of JIM JONES EmptyThu 12 Jun - 4:16

It made a mixture of several worships. Millius said in an interview granted to a French newspaper:

Le Figaro () of April 4, 1982:

Quote :
“I thought less of the modern sects, like that of Moon, that with that of the Assassins, who lived in the Middle East in XIe century and the throttle valves thugs which prevailed in the Indies. I wanted to avoid any allusion to the religions Judeo-Christians. And if during a few moments, Conan is cruficifié, notice that it does not tighten the left cheek with the vulture which him picore the right cheek. If all this bloody fable has a morals, it is pagan.”

A sect of stranglers: THUGS

P. Larousse “Large universal dictionary of the XIXe century”

The Sect of JIM JONES 800pxthugsandprisionnerew0

THUG, S. Mr. - Member of an association the Hindu ones which deliver to the practice human sacrifices.

The Sect of JIM JONES Thugslp7

- Encyclopaedia. The thuggism has its priests, its mysteries, its rites; it has its various initiations and its functions. Its organization goes up with an antiquity the most moved back of. II allots itself, like all the other religions besides, a divine origin. The Kâli goddess, who, in Hindu mythology, represents one of the two principles on which the system of the universe rests, the principle of the destruction, instituted, appears it, to fight with advantage against the principle of creation, the order of the thugs.

The Sect of JIM JONES Thaggi2lw2

Those would thus have received a mission similar to that of the insects, birds and carnivores, charged by nature with repressing exceeding it of its vegetable and animal production. The Kâli goddess thus revealed itself with the thugs the sacred art of strangulation; moreover, extending its protection on these piles missionaries of its worship, whose irreligious people could ignore the goal méritoire and three times saint, it was given the responsability to make disappear the traces from their blessed sacrifices.

The Sect of JIM JONES Khalixn0

Misfortune wanted that one day of the followers, the beginners undoubtedly, the indiscretion to épier the actions of the Kali goddess pushed. They surprised it at the time when, gone down on the ground, it removed the bodies of the victims offered in holocaust. As it is of use among the divinities to punish, from generation to generation, in the person of all human poor, the fugitive escapades of only one or some, the thugs were condemned, as from this day, to make disappear themselves the compromising evidence of what the incrédules persisted in calling their murders.

Far from slowing down the religious zeal of the sectateurs of the goddess Kali, this judgment did nothing but increase it. It resulted from it from the dangers moreover to run! Such an amount of better for the hearts excessively pious women; and the thuggism did not make only proselytes among the Hindu ones, it also made some among their winners, the mahométans. “Which even knows, wonders Mr. Leon de Wailly from whom we borrow part of this information, if there will not have been some English also who will have let themselves go to temptation? ”. A gentleman continued of country in country by the spleen, and reduced, after having exhausted all the sum of the emotions of ici-bas, to be made throttle valve for sky, here is certainly a surprise of high taste.

The ceremony of the initiation of the laymen to the thuggism takes place in the following way: one bathes the neophyte in order to purify it, one it revêt new clothing and one presents it, in the ceremonial prescribed in such a case; with its future accomplices, i.e. with its future brothers; then one goes in a devoted place, where the guru calls upon the Kâli goddess, and begs it to declare by some visible sign if it condescends to accomodate with the number of the her faithful candidate throttle valve. There is hardly example which the candidate was ever pushed back; the goddess is full with kindness, and it has all kinds of ways of expressing its will. The flight of a bird, the cry of an unspecified animal indicate that the member elect is worthy to be allowed. One returns then in the house of an initiate, and, putting at the hands of the new member the iron axe, significant symbol of association, the guru makes him pronounce his wishes. At once that it lent the solemn oath which binds it, the priest puts to him on the language a piece of devoted sugar, and all is known as.

It is not allowed the thugs to spread blood, and it is by strangling them that they make perish their victims. That which spreads only one drop of blood falls into deepest mistaken; it is banished of its caste and is given up even by her companions. Each human sacrifice is preceded by ceremonies in the honor of the goddess, and its share of the spoils is accurately given to its chams or priests, who only are initiated with the mysteries of his worship. One is purified murder only by this voluntary abandonment, to which one has care D to personally add a small gift for the priest.

The Sect of JIM JONES 9780230547179yy9

In her Voyage of a woman around the world, Mrs. Ida Pfeiffer tells that being in Calcutta and proposing to carry on his road beyond Delhi, one sought by appalling accounts to frighten him of the thugs. According to it, they form a company with share; they live of murder and of armed robbery, and, like the Italian gangsters, are ready, St one pays them, to commit all the crimes. “Much of travellers, she says, claim that the thugs belong to a sect chocolate éclair and that they do not kill by cupidity or revenge, but, according to their ideas, to achieve an act méritoire. I took many information, and everywhere it was said to me that it was not a religious law, but the hatred, the revenge or the cupidity which led them to such crimes. These throttle valves need for their terrible trade for an extraordinary address, and also for an untiring patience and a perseverance; they often continue their victim during one month whole, and strangle it in its sleep; or they throw to him by behind, around the neck, a twisted handkerchief or a cord which they draw so abruptly and with as well force as death is instantaneous. In Delhi, one gave me news more comforting; it was ensured me that one had made me these dangers an exaggerated painting, that it was generally very-rare in the Indies which one attacked the travellers, and which the number of the thugs had decreased considerably. Moreover they do not dare anything to undertake against Europeans, because the English government directs against the culprits the most severe continuations”.

This last line of Mrs. Ida Pfeiffer leads us to recall that the thuggism is one of the favorite arguments of England and its partisans against the Hindu ones. How to respect the nationality of people which count in his centre a similar association? Wouldn't this be, however, according to the remark of Mr. de Wailly, to make act of justice not to return 180 million individuals responsible for excesses to which religious fanaticism can involve a relatively tiny portion of the population? Does one have to confuse the victim with the assassin, with the thugs those which they strangle?

Quote :
In CONAN THE BARBARIAN, the bad-guy of the movie is evil cult leader Thulsa Doom and his sinister cult of Set. The character of Doom is lifted unpretensciously from the pages of Medieval history. He is the Old Man of the Mountains, Rashid al-Din Sinan, the real-life chief of the fanatical political and religious terrorist cult, known as the Assassins! Even the scene where Doom commands a cultist to leap from the cliff top is taken from an actual historical event when Count Henri of Champagne visited the Assassin grand-master at his citadel. "No Christian is as loyal to his master as my men are to me" said the charismatic Assassin leader. To prove his point he signaled to two of his men high on a battlement and they obediently threw themselves to their deaths!

James Earl Jones interview:

Quote :
“John initially suggested me reading all that I could on the worship of the Assassins, of their first appearance until our days. It is what I did; I also read works relating to Thulsa Doom, which was a character of the saga of king Kull, of Robert E. Howard, because I do many research on the characters that I play. But the suggestion of John about the Assassins was very useful for me and gave me an additional idea on the character whom he wanted to make me play.”
