Not sure where can find a better pic of this one, but it has clear origin inspiration to King Conan, The Thing in the Crypt and Thulsa Doom I'd say.

That's a sketch from the "Fire & Ice" portfolio, I think.

I concur: That pic definitely is from the "Fire & Ice" research & development department.

Yeah, I agree. So Frazetta was inspired by his pastiches like Cobb or Stout, or did he have some proto-form of this beforehand I wonder? Maybe he did have some preliminary unofficial work on CONAN, but walked away cause he didnt get the money he wanted.

Frazetta was courted heavily by Milius to be a creative consultant for CTB, but apparently Frazetta didn't want any part of it. Milius has stated that many of the scenes in CTB were directly inspired by Frank Frazetta's work. Frank Frazetta is the Ultimate Master of Fantasy art! I hope some day soon to make a pilgrimage to his museum. The "Fire & Ice" project was a collaboration with Ralph Bashki (not sure I spelled that right). Frank was heavily involved in the pre-production of this project. Here's a somewhat little known fact, Thomas Kincade, the much celebrated and much commercialized "Painter of Light" did quite a lot of the background cel art for F&A. It was a fairly decent animated movie for it's time. I would like to see what could be done with both Frank Frazetta's input and today's technology!

Yeah, it comes from "Fire and Ice" sketches and it even appears at the beginning of the film, were
some other artwork is shown before the movie begins.

It features the princess Teegra, her panther pet, his father the king of the Fire, and her brother
who looks like a young Conan.

The drawing itself is shown also as an inspiration for the Orgy scene in the Milius movie, were
Thulsa Doom is in the throne and at his side lies Yasmina and the panter. It is show as that in the documentary
"Painting with fire" as John Milius is talking.

The date of the drawing is 1982.

I don't know, as the movie "Fire and Ice" was released in 1983 but apparently the preproduction
works began aroun 1981, so maybe Millius could have seen that drawing?

(Millius about Frank in "PAINTING WITH FIRE").:
Quote :
I tried to get the mood, the lightning and the feel. And there’s a couple of scenes that
were absolutely dedicated in the movie to Frazetta.

BTW, Milius claims in the documentary to have made "the only true Frazetta-style-looking
movie ever made".
I imagine he says that same time he is caressing his hairy balls. Razz

And yes, Frazetta was asked to work in "Conan the barbarian". De Laurentiis tried to get him
for the movie but Frazetta refused. He was used to do the things in his own and a producer or
director who could tell him to do the things “that way” didn’t simply fit with his personality.

(That info is in the "Conan unchained" documentary wich comes as a bonus in the CTB DVD)

Apparently Frank was then offered the job of painting the movie poster but he said “NO” again.
But he gave the rights to use “The barbarian” painting to be used as an alternate poster.

Yeah, but I dont know, kinda cutting it close, full scale pre-production began in 1979-80 for CTB, and it was to have been released in late 1981.

HA, this illustration looks something like a current Sly Stallone:

I could actually picture him doing a CONAN, his latest RAMBO was very much in the vein of it all.
