| Cantiga 166 is also known as "Como Poden" (or "Como Poden Per Sas Culpas"). More info: | Quote: | | Alfonso el Sabio (the Wise) was king of Castille and Leon during the 13th century. Despite his failings as a king, Alfonso ensured lasting recognition for his collection of "Cantigas de Santa Maria." The text of these works deals largely with miracles of the Virgin, but their sacred themes are often clothed in secular humour. In "Santa Maria Amar", Mary offers protection to a pregnant abbess, whilst in "Como poden per sas culpas" she heals a cripple, whose joyful dance is depicted rhythmically in the music. |
Here is a "recent" interpretation of this canticle, just to compare it with the Poledouris version from Conan:

| Here you'll hear a sample of the original cantiga (166) and find the original lyrics. http://brassy.club.fr/PartMed/Cantigas/CSMIDI.html and here, with voice, percussion and hurdy gurdy (push the angel below). There's also in french an illustrated story of that song. http://marcel.arnoux.free.fr/CANTIGA%20166.html It's amazing, this cantiga (even so dedicated to the Virgin) wasn't "too christian" for Milius.... |

| Yep, exactly, when you think about it, what could be more pagan and barbaric than naked girls and dark cults with an old christian hymn in musical background ! |

| Think they were sacrificing virgins rather than screwing them(like the Orgy chamber), but who knows.
Basil, I think liked the song and used it, perhaps maybe because it was popular locally. Cobb I read used local signs and intermixed them within the architecture and stuff. Gregorian chants seemed to have inspired Basil too obviously. |

| Everyone, just go here:
[Link removed by Moderator because it contains copyrighted material]
You might need to download a torrent software (I got utorrent, which is free), to convert to MP3...but it's worth it. This is the complete soundtrack of the movie -- including the TEmple of Set music. All of it in sterling sound. It's a shame that track was never officially released, but at least this way you can hear all of the CtB music in good sound -- there are notes about the project on the above link, but to summarize, the unreleased stuff was taken directly from the DVD and manipulated via music software for CD-quality sound, removing all of the dialog/sound effects which cloud the music in the movie itself. This music is mixed together with the actual soundtrack CD release from '92 for the "ultimate" ctb soundtrack. Enjoy! |
