New Red Sonja film to start production in October...

At first, I thought this was probably a rumour, but apparently Robert Rodriguez (Desperado, Once Upon a Time in Mexico, Planet Terror...all those crappy Spy Kids movies...) is officially set to produce Red Sonja. Rose McGowan, RR's current main squeeze, is set to play the lead role. Apparently, this will have absolutely nothing to do with the 1985 Brigette Nielsen version (THANK GOD!), but will be a new version based on the Marvel Comics version (I'm not sure wether that means "chain mail bikini" or not). There are several blurbs on the web right now, and some of them mention that inspiration will also be taken from Robert E. Howard's original creation as well. Below is one link to the story:

Personally, I'm kind of looking forward to this...as long as Rodriguez takes a directorial approach more along the lines of "Desperado" instead of "Planet Terror".

Rodriguez was being considered at one time to do the new Conan movie as well...Personally I would like to see a more vetted director like Ridley Scott or even John Milius once again to take that on, but for a lesser known, somewhat cult hero like Red Sonja, I think Rodriguez will be a good fit.

Rodriguez (lucky hman!) is obvioulsy trying to find some film vehicule for his new girl. First "Barbarella" -- which seems to be dead in the water? -- then now "Red Sonja." Reminds me of Renny Harlin and Geena Davis in the 90s.

It would be funny if the 1985 version is better.

I don't think that would make me laugh...I think it would literally be hard to make a movie worse than the '85 release. I just hope Rodriguez takes a more serious approach to Red than he did with the "Grindhouse" stuff he did. Sure, Planet Terror was mildly entertaining in it's own campy way, but Robert E. Howard's characters (and the deviated/inspired ones such as Marvel's Red Sonja) work best when perceived as a figures in a hypothetically historic era. That is to say that these characters could have possibly really existed prior to recorded history. In any case, it looks like Rodriguez has not seen nor does he have any intention of watching the '85 Red Sonja movie, so perhaps he will stick to the Roy Thomas (Marvel era) origins.

Supposedly he's just producing with his squeeze as the lead, I dont care for her.

If this movie really comes out, I for sure gonna see it, even if... don´t know, but Red Sonja brings up some memories.

After watching the first 2 Conan`s I just had to buy Red Sonja. I knew, they said it was trashy, I said to myself, a little bit trashy it`s okay, I like it somehow, but then i got THIS film, man, I think I paid 17 euros for it.

But Rose as Sonja is definitve not good IMO. They should cast someone different, someone taller. Just from the physique, Nielsen was a pretty good choice. .Now, I think Rhona Mitra may do good, she looks beautiful but still powerful and I think she could pull it off as a warrior

Dont know, not really a character I care about. I think Rodriguez and Rose split recently within the week btw.

I used to love the character, back when the miniseries of Frank Thorne was released in Spain. It came with the Conan the barbarian comic book as a complement. Later it was released as a single collection. The stories were highly surreal and dark, but with a high level of aesthethic care. Also the erotic atmosphere was very high. These stories were practically a wet weird teen dream. It was good to find that side of the Hyborian age, I was kinda tired of the macho tone of the Conan stories, everyone almost the same one, also the ambientation in the Conan stories was practically the same medieval pseudo-realistic one. Sonja gave a fresh air to that world, least to me.

Also, watching frame to frame a so hot female, practically naked, and knowing she won't have sex ever, kinda made her even more atractive.


Having a problem with sex, this character is very interesting. The interesting characters are these who have internal conflicts, if they are only extenal -(I want to kill that fucker, I want to get that treasure)- they are too childish. If the character has an internal conflict that is being evolved through the story, then it's a good story. We need to see changes through the characters -(see Milius Conan for example, his maduration from begining to end).

Sonja's world has a lot of posibilities to explore, in that sexual represion. See this clear poetic simbolism:

I think this girl doesn't have the character. Not tough enough. Watching her holding a sword would not be credible. She doesn't look like a warrior at all. Also, I don't like her very much as an actress, while Jessica Biel is much more mature.

Maybe they release this Sonja movie to see the reactions, and thinking about a possible franchise. If the new CONAN movie also works they would probably put both characters together in a new one.

Finally I must say i'm not very excited about all of this. I don't trust in this actual Hollywood cinema, it's not for me. It could have been great when I was 15, but now I feel like a waste of time. It's VERY childish.

Yeah, so, now they are speaking about Jessica Alba as the new choice. Maybe cuz Robert Rodriguez doesn't want his exgirlfriend around anymore. Well I don't know what to say, this girl is gorgeous but has a too Lolita look that doesn't fit at all with the character... for me at least... I would prefer a more mature looking woman. And a more mature looking movie than the shit that will come from the ass of Rodriguez



(Now, the moment to praise Miliu's Conan AGAIN ):I think it's true when everybody say Milius's movie is amazing cuz it takes itself seriously AND WORKS! How many movies of sword and sorcery takes themselves seriously -and work-??? Maybe it's because all these new fantasy movies are so comic-book in style, they don't know how to do them, otherwise.

Also if you take s&s seriously, you must include high amounts of violence and slashing AND sex. First is filmed with this revolting zoom and shaky camera effects which make the battles annoying, and makes me wonder wtf are they planning a coreography that finally can't be seen... Second, sex practically doesn't exists in these modern movies. They are so clean pure, like the Middle Earth where hobbits and elfs grow from the farts of fairies, and nobody fucks ever.

Also no deep anything at all. Simple dialogues and simple characters, which made me remember that bullshit De Camp or Lin Carter or some other asshole said about s&s being NOTHING but fun tales for teens. Ok, so these movies are, so congratulations you Carter and Decamp and all yor mothers and sisters for doing so much for the genre. I allways hated that words specially coming from these people. It's like sying YEAH, I KNOW THIS IS SHIT, SO THAT'S WHAT I'M GOING TO WRITTE. I'm not gonna try to do something better... Is not that Milius' script is Shakespeare -(sorry for the common place again)- but hell, we are proving it has a lot of intentional symbolisms, reason why its still so strong. And there's nothing wrong with the things "just for fun", but I just don't find them funny at all. Maybe i'm getting too fucking old. I just want some tits and asses, and some headcuts for satan's sake!!!!!!

Mitra or Biel I think could fit the role or Milla Jovovich .

Hm, Milla Jovovich could fit a lot better, maybe too thin for the chain bikiny but... a lot tougher and more credible. My vote is for Biel anyway.

I pretty much like the looking Horley gave to Sonja, that face and attitude. She looks dangerous, not just a pretty doll model playing with a knife as she was allways depicted.

Very good, though the chain bikiny is a classic I think a more realistic movie would be better. This Sonja looks like a true human being, she is strong but also beautiful, and the clothes and look are very barbarian without being silly at all. Also she looks Mongolian or Russian as she should.
